I have a Shimano XT M739 chainset on my Proflex, I recently had to change the middle chainring due to wear & tear.
The outer ring could do with replacing soon as well but.... what is going on?

It looks like the outer ring is joined to the crank spider? so I guess a regular 4-bolt outer ring won't fit?

Where can I get a replacement outer ring?

i think shimano is pretty much the only option on these, they do pop up on ebay every now and then and the lx version also fits but it's a black ring as opposed to the silver xt version.

although you may end up special ordering it from a shop but that means paying proper shimano rrp  which could make it financially silly.

maybe look for another chainset in 5 bolt compact, the m737 xt for example, i think it takes the same b/b and has the same ring size but 5 bolt rings seem to go way cheaper coz no one (apart from us lot) is using them.

:)

oh... and I just bought a Middleburn 32T 4 bolt middle ring as well...

I'll soldier on with the outer ring, and will look into the Shimano outer rings in 4-bolt pattern.

What a stupid system! what were Shimano thinking??!!

Thanks for that link, the XT ring is exactly what I am after :D

The other option is to fit a replacement spider that will take conventional chainrings in either 4- or 5-bolt patterns.

You mean a new crank & spider?

No. Shimano made a spider that you could fit to these cranks that accepted conventional chainrings.

And here it is in action on my much lamented 856 :(
