Errrr lgf he did actually say when set to friction

Other people will be reading this and the obvious question will arise. *THE EDIT PART* 'Why does a SRAM mech not always work with Shimano?'

I dont think it would work well any way as the a small shift on the thumbie would be amplified by the SRAM mech - if I have my cable pull the right way round.

*MORE EDITING!* speaking as an engineer, bodger and general skip reader...

No, it's the other way round - a SRAM needs more cable pull per click (which is why it is more resistant to muck etc).

I think you'll struggle to pull enough cable for a full range of gears - but the best thing to do is try it out.

There are some little tricks like filling out the cable groove of the thumbie with strips of insulating tape to increase the radius.

I would probably try with a road lever on a Paul's thumbie mount as this has a bit more clearance all round to increase the diameter. SRAM also do road barcons (for TT bikes) and you can fit one of these onto the Paul's mount.

Wont work in either SIS or friction modes. The shifter doesnt pull the cable enough to move the derailleur through the whole range, you end up not being able to get the 3 lowest gears. If you want to get all McGuyver about it you can probably use a Travel Agent to increase the amount of pull.
