Wide bars

Can anyone help me, I'm after a set of wide (650mm+) flat bars however all the new flat bars I can find are for 31.8mm over size stems as opposed to the older smaller stem and all the older bars out they are too narrow? Anyone know of any wide flat bars for the older narrower stems? They don't have to be old but they have to look retro.

Re:

Gonna be tricky.

I eventually found some silver hi-polished aluminium 25.4mm clamp flat bars with 5° sweep from Condor Cycles at £14.99 – these are 580mm wide though. Got some wider risers from Condor too – same price, finish, 25.4 clamp and about 600mm.

Evans, Cycle Surgery, Halfords have wider but these are modern hi-tech black. There's also the eBay for NOS or used and abused.

Another option is remove the old stem, fit a quill stem adapter/converter http://www.wiggle.co.uk/profile-quill-t ... 5360302752 in its place to take a modern 1 1/8 stem with a 31.8mm clamp to allow wider flat bars. On-One do a silver hi-polish aluminium bar http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HBOOOFB/on- ... -handlebar They also have a 'vintage finishing kit' section. There's also a 'Flatland' 780mm 5° sweep bar from Superstar Components http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/f ... 80-bar.htm in polished silver and various funky anodised colours but these have a modern graphic at a jaunty angle on them. Chain Reaction have a 31.8mm clamp Ritchey Classic Mountain Flat Handlebar http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ritc ... -prod62153

For a shiny polished retro looking component free of modern graphics, I used surgical spirit on a soft cloth. This dissolves away printed logos/graphics – I discovered this by accident when cleaning something

I'm sure others can advise you further and better hopefully :)

Re:

I've often thought about requesting a "sticky" thread for this subject. It's getting harder and harder to find what you're describing... which is the same thing I usually want and that most of us retro-geeks need (clean, retro looks with comfortable, modern width). Here are a couple of decent options that I know of, still readily available:

- Origin8 Pro Sweep. Very inexpensive (about $25 US), 25" wide (640mm), pretty straight with a 6 degree sweep, black. I actually just bought one of these and have to say I'm REALLY impressed with the finish: Nice, old-school, hard-anodized, glossy black - not that cheap "shot peened," flat-black crap you find so often these days, that scratches off the first time you install it. Pretty stout. Made in China, unfortunately, if you care about such things. (I think there might be two different width versions of this bar, so be careful when ordering.)

(index page... product link not working?)

- Nitto B810AA. 27 1/2" (700mm!) wide, 15 degree sweep, polished silver. As long as this option stays viable, my world is good and, really, what else could you ask for? Other than price... it's kind of at the high end of the price spectrum, at $110 US. Coming from Nitto, at least you know the finish and craftsmanship will be top-notch, and that it will last as long as you want it to.

- I've also used the On-One Fleegle Pro bar, and like it. It has some funny bends in it (to locate your hands similar to where they'd be on a straight bar, without having to change stems), but at least it doesn't have any "rise" to it. So it looks right on a retro bike. 26" (660mm), 15 degree sweep, lots of colors to choose from, about $35 US.

Always on the lookout for more...

I'm glad I'm not the only one looking.

I hadn't realised that Nitto made 700mm flat bars, I Kew they did narrower flat bars, shame about the price especially as their 500mm bars are only £30.

Re:

Keep an eye out for surly torsion bars-666mm of nitto made steel bars.

Re:

I would imagine there would be a lot more flex in wide bars with a narrow clamp size , compared to the 31s .
But not having used any , I don't know . Enlighten me

Mike

On the motorbike bars they are 3 - 4 times thicker than bicycle bars. I used a set for a couple of years and didn't notice any real dramas

Re:

I guess the stem chosen makes a difference in the flex as well as bar size . Some flex a lot , whereas others like Syncros Cattleheads don't
