Which 'V' Brake?

Russell

Old School Grand Master
Evening,

I need a set of 'V's for a ride I'm building but I'm a bit out of touch. So...

Do I just buy a set of XTR brakes safe in the knowledge that they're the best or are there other 'V's out there that perform as well as XTR or better and may even be cheaper?

Help!

I ran some Avid Magnesium V's that worked ok....but generally speaking, I haven't seen or used anything that is as durable and works as well as the XTR's.

I would think the XT's are pretty close to what the XTR's are, but less money.

xtr are the best, although xt a close second.

what matches your bike best

Russell,

XTR work extremely well.

But I have to say, Avid Arch Supreme's work better (but clog worse without the extremely rare Mud Arches). They are getting harder to find though.

But Avid Ultimates work better than any of them IMO. Set up nicely they are so sharp. Work well with an XTR lever, but don't look as nice as an Ultimate Black Ops Lever.

And they do a really neat trick and you can reverse the noodle guide so you can run the cable smoothly as if it were feeding from the other way round.

I've got some Avid Single Digit Ti spare - work really well but don't 'fit' with my bikes at present.

It may be heresy but I've always found that Deore perform as well as XTR (using decent levers) for a fraction of the price

So Avids are getting a lot of love here then?

I was thinking maybe go for these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Avid-Arch-Rival-5 ... dZViewItem

Sorry for being a klutz, but I went straight from cantis to discs so dont really know much about Vs

Ed, those are levers? You got a pic? How much do you want for them?

Nope, the SD Ti are arms (I sold the levers a while back).

I've got spare levers (SD5 and SD7 I think) as well as other unused Avid arms - I'll have a hunt tomorrow and drop you a PM with prices if you like
