What would be a

Heavy

Retro Guru
I'm going to pick up a 1962 Viking tomorrow, and believe I might be offered this Vitus at too. It's has traditional lugs and a mix of components inc campag.

I'm not planning to buy it, but at what price would I be a fool to leave it?

Cheers.

Re:

The Campagnolo parts are 980 which was the lowest set, the rings on the chainset look steel to me so lower end again, TBH I don't know about the frame but the components look like they were taken off a lower mid range Raleigh from the mid 80's.

I personally wouldn't want to pay more than £70 for it, so £50 would be a great price, but I am a tightwad

Did Vitus make steel framed? I have my doubts that is genuine vitus ??

That is my thinking too, I think it might be a Raleigh 501 frame resprayed.

When you are checking it out flip it over and have a look under the bottom bracket at the cable guide on a Raleigh will be plastic and marked Raleigh.

Looking at that might be a Vitus frame, 990 was slightly better finished, but 980 was used in many places but was very basic compaired to their other offerings. Industrial black finish on the pivot bolts instead of chrome (990) polished finish instead of anodised.

Re:

Thanks for the info everyone.

Here's a pic of the lugwork & fork.

The reason I ask about The 'fool to leave it' price is that the seller seems really keen to clear space and would rather it go to a genuine cyclist.

Re:

The Mystery deepens, those look like Haden lugs I have the same on my Raleigh Record Ace (1980) the fork crown looks like one Raleigh/Carlton used on bikes in the early to mid 70's, check the dropouts thoroughly if they are forged Campagnolo, or Suntour will be a reasonably good - good frame, then about £100 if it is your size ;)
