What Dawes have I?

Dawesofperception

Retro Newbie
I've just bought a Dawes, but not anything like the ones in the scanned catalogues. It has a 25.5" frame, colour is bronze, no transfers or panels except for "Dawes" written in italic block capitals either side of the front downtube, "Dawes Stainless Steel" on the front mudguard, and a union jack with "made in Britain" at the base of the rear downtube. Frame number is stamped on the offside rear dropout, QD7970. There is a small metal plate on the headstock with "Dawes" on it in italic blocks. Brakes are Weinmann type 730 with white shrouds, gears are ten speed Huret. Tyres are 27 x 1 and quarter on steel rims with alloy hubs.

So ..... any ideas out there please?

Thanks for the reply, I can't make the image file small enough to download. I'm guessing it's a 70's bike from the colour - Fords and BL cars came in bronze/brown then.

Weinmann brakes normally carry a date stamp on the rear in the form of a dial (month and year). That should give you a ballpark date.

The head badge changed from "DAWES" in a circle with a laurel wreath to "Dawes" in a plain black oval at some point between 1980 (when my brother had a Dawes Lightning for his birthday) and 1984 (when my broken Dawes Kingpin was replaced under warranty).
