Ah, yes, I'm familiar with that one. A friend of mine got it from opening a false FedEx mail. Avast lighted up like a christmas tree, but the next second he had the local version of that screen.

Seeing as his install was rather old and we were planning a hard drive upgrade anyway, we went for a full format and a new Windows install.
That's the beauty of backing up your data on a regular basis. If something happens, no need to mess around with safe mode and all kinds of tools. Just format the thing and get it over with.

I reckon the most effective way to protect your computer is t not go to any dodge sites in the first place. You'll save yourself a lot of time and bother that way...

My wife's friends run a computer repair shop, they get to see all sorts of stuff that folks download + virus. One customer was adamant that he typed in CBT to get motorcycle lessons - did he have to click on all the search results though?

That's true, I hadn't "visited " any websites specialising in "gentleman's special interests" for several days prior to getting this virus. :roll:

My brother got the e-crime ransom-ware on his lap top and I managed to get rid of it with one of the free tools, but I can't remember which it was now.

However, as well as your anti-virus software and firewall protection you can also help protect your PC from some malware and tracking sites by modifying your PCs host file as detailed here: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

It's essentially a list of tracking sites and other unwanted and unnecessary sites which it points to your own PCs address, so that it doesn't actually try to contact the remote address with all the unwanted cookies, malware, trackers etc.
