Waste not want not!!!!

Whilst at the tip the other day getting rid of some garden waste, I spotted a late 80s Muddyfox with various half tidy bits on it. With a bit of cash in my pocket, I asked the manager if I could purchase said bike for a nominal fee only to be told that they are not allowed to sell any items that come into their possession for risk of any repercussions. Therefore the bike will be crushed and sold as scrap metal.
What a waste.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Where do you go for your bargain finds?

My local tip has a deal with a local guy who has them and renovates them for charity! (that's a good deal!)

Ive had that excuse given to me before.
Annoying as you then see the same said bike in the local free ad's.,

I've managed to liberate small bits if ive been quick (got an XTR seat QR once) or if your lucky you can get stuff before its off'd by the dumpee. all depends on the centre/councill etc a shame

my local tip will sell bikes to you but the larger tip in the next town wont its a bit hit and miss to be honest

the bloke at my tip though seems to want £20 for everything regardless of what condition or what bike it is;
sometimes a good thing sometimes just too much if you only want a part

i have a friend in New haven and their tip has a shop 'of sorts' he got a full suspension diamondback for £6 coz it needed a rear wheel and i got 6 nice flower pots for 50p

My local tip won't let me have anything from their. We are meant to be recycling and it all goes to waste.

A local council supports a cycle renovation charity and some of the tips keep old bikes for them to collect, although there was a bit of bother at one such tip where it was found that the best bikes were being kept for a bloke who sells bikes at local car boot sales. Not all their tips are in the scheme and staff at those tips that aren't are happy to let people take old bikes, but eventually all tips will be in the scheme. Can't have any complaints about that approach.

my local Recycling centre (TIP) wont have it either, All metal goes into a large container that gets squished every 10 mins or so :evil: so no chance of getting to re-cycle any cycles ................................ unless you like bike pizza :roll:

're-use' should be the phrase that pays. A PAT test certificate and a proper recycling of clearly usable stuff would mean a lot less goes to landfill (a huge amount still does).

Many wood products are used in power generation which is fine by me. But many sites use the WEEE as an excuse to chuck everything in a skip regardless of condition despite:
