Can't quite imagine how you invest that much in a custom build and then leave it in the attic (I suppose health issues are a possibility).

There's folk on here with bikes worth more than that stuffed away in a dusty attic, probably NOS frames with NOS parts put on them too!

Retro mtb prices seem to be out-inflating inflation, even run of the mill budget retro mtb's seem to be demanding high prices these days (not saying they sell at the asking price though).

MTB'ers seem a more practical lot, there is very little of the 'it's only original one' idea that crops up with road bikes.
I guess there is some value in an unused frame, but a thing is only worth what you can sell it for and the cost when new is immaterial.

Yes I think that, and also that relatively speaking mtb's are pretty new when compared to road bikes from as far back as the turn of the century and certainly more commonly for the 40's or 50's, still in original paint with fancy lugwork and lining.

For me, custom made steel frames are supposed to get repainted every few years anyways, notwithstanding custom fancy pants jobs, team bikes etc
