Universal definition of "Ugly" as it applies to re

Old School Hero
The BOTM thread got me thinking about this. I think there needs to be a collaboration on these things. Here's my take:

(I consider everything below ugly unless it's does as a replica of a race bike)
-Mismatched tires (color, not brand/model)
-Riser bars with bar ends
-Saddles that are more than 5deg off from level (jumping bikes excluded)
-more than 3 colors being used between the stems/handlebars/bar-ends/seatposts/cranks/grips/saddle
-Gel "comfort" saddles
-1.5" (or narrower) slick tires on mountain bikes
-Twisted spokes (as a long-time wheelbuilder I'd have to say that this is just dumb)

Coloured tyres in general*
Horrendous use of spacers and riser stems
Zero or postive saddle-bar drop
Reflectors
trimbles

I'll take back those skinny tyres though

*there are exceptions

I will take some aspects on your opinion...

And add mine...

-Mountain bikes with chopper fenders (it´s made to get dirty)
-Those 5 inches of headset spacers... as Kaiser wrote.
-Horizontal brake levers
-3lbs of stickers, most of them with things the bike doesn´t have...

Except for the tyres, the bikes in my shed are guilty of all of those to some extent!

I actually run some bar ends inboard - a bit like mini tri-bars. I find with wide riser bars having barends on the end are dangerous and get hooked on things, but running them inboard give me extra hand positions when on the flat (fire-roads or paths getting to the trail head). A mechanic I used to work with BITD used to put his there, and as a bit of a sheep, I copied him. I've been doing in since - never seen anyone else do it though - I wonder why?

:D

I was agreeing with you there for a while till i got to the 1.5 tyres although it was 1.6 Contis I fitted to my Apex and risers! :p and it seems I'd built the courier bike that I kinda sold it for!

And then I have spacer isues on my Dr to sort out, that is a tad sad actually!

*gets hacksaw back out*

-black components ( I miss silver )
-steep rising stems
-rigid forks without suspension correction
-Shimano QRs ( even though they're the best-BUGGER! )

I'll go with "non-functional" being the number one sign of ugly to me. That covers some of the above mentioned colored tires and crap like that, but I'll extend it to poorly designed and dangerous hack components used just because they are pretty colors. Don't get me wrong, I love pretty colors, but the parts still need to be bike worthy and many anno trinkets just aren't.

Function = Beauty
Glamour and prone to Breakage = UGLY!

I'd agree for the most part, but it depends on the bike. Stupid-light stuff on race bikes is okay. Stupid-light stuff on DH/Freeride bikes is dumb and ugly.

As for 1.5" slicks... come on! If it's a mountain bike, it should have proper rubber. If not, get a hybrid!

I've got one more thing to add...

Zip-tied "Mojo's" (action figures, animal horns, etc.)
