They made great BMX rims.
There's nothing in the archive or on MOMBAT but there is a little bit on BikePro;

"There are two note worthy rim makers in Japan, Araya and Ukai. They are note worthy because each of them has had their rims sold as original equipment on new bicycles and at one point both had their rims sold in the US as after market replacement parts. Both are well known for excellent quality and workmanship, however, at the moment, only Araya seems to have rims available in the US for after market replacements.

Ukai's participation in the United States parts distribution system dropped off beginning in the fall of 1987, after the G7 meeting drove the value of the dollar down and Japanese goods edged their way toward double the Yen price. Ukai is reported to have been the maker of the Specialized and also made the Ritchey rims that are sold on new bikes as original equipment. The Ukai manufactured Ritchey rims can be identified bt their welded rather than sleeved joint."

Does anyone know what their range of 26" rims was?

I believe they were OEM on early TBG Kona's, my 1990 Cindercone still has them (UMT-17) see build link in signature, might be worth checking out the Kona archive for 1989 & 1990 as I believe they also spec'd UMT-20's

Re:

Nice build :cool: That's the sort of thing I had in mind for the Mountain Klein i.e. mid(ish) range spec for a mid(ish) range bike.

In the absence of any catalogues I've plundered the various for sale posts etc and come up with the following;

- Rocky Mountain spec'd Ukai in 1988 on their Avalanche and Hammer bikes, using something called the U12...
- Kona used Ukai UM-20's in '88 to '90 and then changed to the UMT-17 for '91 & '92.

Other than the anodising, I don't think there's much difference between the U12 and UM-20.

Are there are any other rims I should know about?

These are speedline's and very sought after with a high price in the bmx 20" and cruiser 26" world

Re:

Thread hijack: I've spotted a DX hub laced to a a Ukai rim, did they ever produce a concave rim? I only ask as the rim on this wheel is either concave or badly worn? I think its a UMT rim (but can remember the number after it).

Re:

No worries; hopefully someone will be able to help.

Do we think the Specialized GX26/X26 and the Ukai UM-20/U12 are one and the same? They look pretty similar...
