Hi, bike at moment has 700x20 tyres on.any suggestions as to the best size to use as want to purchase some new ones many thanks.

Hi, there alesa rims bike is a raleigh Dyna Tech 400 from the early 90s

I think you’d be OK with 23mm

20s and 23s are now not fashionable, the techy bods now reckon 25s and 28s have a better rolling resistance and more comfort as an added bonus.
28 is a push clearance wise on some frames, but 25 should be ok. I reckon modern 25 clinchers have a similar profile to the vittoria cx tubs I raced on

GP5000 in 25mm a good grippy responsive tyre or a Pirelli 4 seasons 25 is a good option unless you after a heavy winter tyre?

I find my Vittoria Corsa Control Graphene 2.0 700 x 25 to be amazingly puncture resistant. Over 10k kilometres without punctures.

GP5000 are lovely and incredibly fast but certainly where I live (flinty Hampshire / Dorset) are a summer-only tyre. Even then I rarely get over 1500 miles out of them before they are irreparably cut.

You could go with 700x20 if you can find any new ones, otherwise 700x23c should be fine. 700x25c might give you issues with frame clearance, or not, depending on how "racy" your frame is. I wouldn't try anything wider than that though as these older bikes were never designed for them .

If you want to keep the retro look, Michelin Dynamic Classics come in a 20c size, but like others have said, unless your frame has really tight tyre clearances, 23c or 25c is most likely going to be fine too (and easier to get hold of). If you're unsure, going with 23c is your safest bet.

Dynamic Classics are the cheapest choice for a decent retro-looking tyre, and I find them actually relatively light for the price – though not that puncture resistant, so it does depend what sort of riding you have planned. Actually I've not put loads of miles on any of my Dynamic Classics yet so I'd be interested to know from others about their durability...
