TVT Greg Lemond and brake lever/delta set up

Re:

i'm sure we'd all love to see more shots of greg - he will always be one of my all-time bike heroes - no one ever looked cooler on a bike, even with his full set of metal braces back in the early 80s!!

He's a huge hero of mine as well. Funny thing is when people ask me if Greg is a huge asshole and is petty like Lance claimed he was.
I always tell them the same thing about how gracious and nice he is. Nicest guy in the world honestly. And in the bike world, absolutely the nicest. He would literally spend all day talking to you about anything and everything.
Back in June over lunch we were talking about the riots and shooting that happened earlier in the year and just tons of random stuff.

Honestly, the whole family is super nice.

Re:

Saleguy,

Thanks for posting the photos of Greg's 1989 bike and it would be great to see more!
It's great to hear your insight having met Greg in person. I enjoy his contributions on Eurosport. It is great to see him back involved in cycling and he gave us some of the prettiest team bikes ever.

Regards,

Pat

Pat,

I wish I could watch the Eurosport shows more. He is good. I find their little perch they lean on funny/weird. But that's a whatever. I haven't asked him about it yet. I am supposed to visit them end of the month or early next month. Just have to figure everything out.

He's a huge hero for many reasons. If you think about it, there hasn't been many or any innovations in cycling after Greg retired.
Clipless,
glasses
power meters
aero and hardshell helmets
aero bars and bikes
electric shifting
money and sponsorship

tons and tons of things he brought forth into cycling.

I made a list once when we were talking and he has a huge amount of knowledge regarding it and cycling in general. Super fun guy to be around and talk to. and he's an excellent host/cook.

And he's still got it fitness wise. He can't ride as long or as far due to his medical condition, but he's still fast as all get out!

The picture below, we were riding and he needed to stop and adjust the seat height. I said I would wait. And he said, just ride ahead, "I will catch up"
I told him, if it was anyone else saying that to me, I would be super offended!!!! Had a good laugh on that.

you're such a lucky guy! greg and kathy have always come across as super nice and let's face it, anything armstrong has ever uttered can quite rightly be treated with utter contempt!

here's a great youtube clip of the rapha guys meeting up with greg - i think that this says it all . . .

how did you get to know him?

I've been in the bike industry for 30 years now and have met them thru that.

We/Ive done some special work for him in the past and am working on something with him now. At least it's possible. Not sure yet. He wants too, just working on things still.

Anyways, I must say I was lucky enough to be let into their home and they are fantastic people. And personally, I don't get how Lance could do what he did to them and everyone else(I know Lance personally too by the way). Still just boggles the mind there.

I am glad that things are turning around for him. There are still a ton of people who have not apologized or made amends. Just as there are tons whom LA has not apologized to or made amends with yet.

Anyways, I will see what I can do about more pictures. I have them on three different devices. Need to get them all on one and make sure the files are small enough.

Re:

This is incredible to read this insight, salesguy (BTW what's your name?!) How does his condition affect his riding these days? I'm sure I saw somewhere that the more he rides, the sicker he gets - is that true?

You're spot on about a complete lack on innovation since Greg retired. I have to say that I'm totally bored with current day cycling - just one look at all those robot looking "skelfs" trying to mask their pain all the time, just does nothing for me - I might as well be watching horse racing! :?

I take it he knows these guys? >>

I love the fact that they are so into Greg's career, even to go as far as this retracing of his Tour de France time trials around Lac Vassiviere! I would love to join them on something like that!

:D

salesguy is just a name i had to come up with for Facebook. I used to be the GM of a cycling shoe company here in the US and I had to do the social media stuff, but I didn't want to have a Facebook account. And didn't want to have all that personal info out there. So I came up with Salesguy. Real name is Michael.

Anyways, yeah, Greg. He was the last true innovator in cycling. I am kind of like you in I don't really like watching anymore. It just gets old. I know they are all doped to the max, or I should say just below the threshold of getting caught, and it's frustrating.

I started out racing 30+ years ago and I miss the old days. Watching people jump and go and NOT have radios where people would be like, Oh no biggie. Back in the day, it used to be real riding where people had to work!

I stopped watching during the Armstrong era. I couldn't watch it. Made me mad. After that, even tho I sponsored pros with gear, I couldn't watch. I would check highlights and info on Cyclingnews or the other sites. But that's it.
I did watch last year. A bit of it. Not all. But I will say it's the same as Lance's time. And it's just sad.

As for Greg's health, yes, he still has a medical issue. And yeah, the more he rides the more it kicks in. He said he is good for about an hour a day solid effort. But he can go longer if needed but just hurts more after. Which is sad to see of course. But I'll tell you, he can still hammer! He was flying up hills and still has a huge sprint on him.

He looks good. Seems very happy. I know things have been rough given all the Lance BS. But it's half over. Still has the USPS suit he is involved in on the periphery. But he's good. Seems it anyways which i guess is a start!

Re:

Well, I couldn't have written that better myself, Michael - Armstrong did a Schumacher on cycling and bored a lot of us to death with it. I was showing my girlfriend Katie some old Armstrong footage on youtube and even as a newbie to cycling she remarked, "How on earth can he ride so fast going uphill??!"

Well, there's a story behind that . . . !!

Anyway, I'm delighted to hear that things are on the up and up for Greg - please pass on my kindest regards and tell him that he continues to inspire many of us to this day and even in spite of my 50th birthday being not a million years away! My Oakley Factory Pilots still have the power to make me feel like a pro bike rider every time I go for it out there on the road!!

All the best,

Craig

Ps just found this - what a legend!
