Love the open ended tubes on the dropouts for water ingress, although the thickness of the metal would need decades to rust through

What amazed me at the time is that raleigh started MIG welding mtb frames in Nottingham at the time mass production was moving to the far East pursuing lower cost.
Did they think - "if we can import a crap mtb- shaped- object for $100, let's try to make that here"?
