Wow. Thats a really nice bike. I bet someone places a bid and then it will sell for more than $550. Tempted...really tempted.

I'm a bit dubious about that bike. I would certainly check that it has a TET number before taking any interest at that price.

He says it is 93 or 94, and the head tube decal and the Velocity stem are 1993 Kona and the dropouts are consistent with the 91-93 Kona pattern, but the frame isn't the 1993 Kona shape. It looks more like a 1991 frame.

Also if it was a 1992 or 1993 Hot, it would have a fluted downtube, but I can't see any sign of fluting. If anything, the down tube looks tapered like a Concept tube. I that's so, then it could be a 1991 Hot, or if it has no TET number it could be a 1991 Explosif.

I wonder if the US culture is a more trusting one than the British, because this isn't the first Hot I've seen put up for auction over there with not a single shred of evidence that it is a Hot other than the word of the seller. It's a non-standard paint job with no decals (why?) and if it has a TET number, he is choosing not to photograph it. Why not? Up to him, but I personally wouldn't dream of bidding for it on the basis of the information he has given.

Kona offered the Hot's without paint. My shop sold dozens, if not hundreds of them. We repainted them ourselves. Since the Hot was a pseudo production bike, they came with all sorts of variations as well with respect to tubing and even braze ons.

with the kit on it, it's potentially worth a punt at $550 anyway i reckon

Too true...you get such cheap bikes in the States.
If this were in the UK at BIN £362....I don't think it would take very long to sell :x

I'm not sure if its that the US culture is more trusting but that they don't see the Hot as being all that special and therefore some could potentially be unaware of the high regard that some people hold these bikes in making serial numbers irrelevant
