T'aint an mtb but she's retro sho nuff.

I have been playing with Raleigh Twenties. Someone gave me a free one, and I had a go and quite liked it. My girlfriend who hasn't ridden a bike since childhood felt confident on it from the off, so I bought a matching one for me. And they fit sideways on a narrowboat. So I bought a second one for me, for all of £2.20 on the Evilbay.

It rides a bit like a steel roadster, only a bit twitchier. Better handling than most folders.

What does the left hand gripshift do?
Its one of the more looney inventions of Sachs/SRAM - a dual drive. Basically a 3 speed internal hub with a 7 speed cassette body attached to give 3x7 gears.

The left shifter works the hub gear and jums ratios pretty close to a front triple.

In practice on the flat its a bit like having the granny on a compact mtb you only need it for climbing cliffs.

Works surprisingly well and gives the bike enough top end to frighten full size road bikes.

Sturmey Archer and I think Shimano do those dual drive hubs aswell now so there must be something in it.

And you can get knobbly tyres for a Birdy as it does have some off road capability. Surprisingly a Brompton can handle a bit of singletrack an all !

I haven't seen the Sturmey and Shimano combined hub and derailleur gears - only their many geared internal hubs that copy the Rohloff idea.

I would love to get a Rohloff for this when I win the lottery.

The massive 1" travel front and back suspension is great for whacking through London potholes that would otherwise eat the bike.
