So there have been many of us who have struggled at one point or another to solve the need of the dreaded missing Syncros ahead stem cap. Recently I stumbled on the fact that Specialized had recently (last year or two?) introduced a stem (Pro-set?) which allows for variable angles adjustment, and it seems can be used with a special "offset" stem cap.

Only reference I can find on the Specialized website is a gawd awful "wagon wheel" stem cap:

However in browsing this online e-commerce site, i found some aftermarket 2° and 4° stem caps:

Anyone try these stem caps for Specialized stems on the Syncros stems? Or does anyone know off hand what degree slope are on Syncros ahead stems?

It's not so much that the Syncros top-cap is angled as that it isn't 'round...'

...it's eliptical (thought I'd better get that right as I said 'Oval' last time the subject was raised  )

well it covering a "angled" cut stem top as opposed to flat, would make it "elliptical". so perhaps this wouldn't work? :(

Bit of an issue huh - didn't Rocky mountains come with the same style stem or was the cap round instead of elliptical?

Surely a round one >plastic< could be squashed as a temporary fix?

Luckily my stem came with one, unluckily someone had lost the original Gold coloured Syncros clamp bolt assembly... anyone have one in the spares box they could send me?!

Huh? Don't think so... :?

Depends if the problem is the aesthetic one of not having a top cap that fits or the practical one of preloading the headset bearings without a top cap. It'll solve one of those problems :)

A workable bodge is to use the thicker aheadset plastic top caps that sink in, looks ok from a distance and you can preload.

I have found that using starfangles can be a pain in the arse and the original wedge are even harder to come by.
But I recently tried a BBB Powerhead like http://bbbcycling.com/bike-parts/headset-parts/BAP-03/ where the expander makes a nice fit in my Alu steerer (MAGS) and then bolting down is straight and easy, and doesn't twist like starfangeld can. It made my original Alu top cap easier to use. Shame I didn't get more at the bargain price, as the proper price is more than a few quid. Other make similar 'heads'.

I couldn't get the angled metal cap for my Syncros when I did my On-One 29er build..... so I cut a Hope headset spacer so I could use a normal Ahead cap or Head doctor.

Like this....
