hi all, i picked up a 16 inch 1995 kona muni mula today. stripping it all down went smoothly. as soon as i got to the bottom bracket i knew it would be trouble. it seems that it is seized solid in the frame. it is a shimano cartridge bb. how would i be best tackling this? thanks in advance.

fasten your bb tool into a vice and use the frame for leverage.
It would be ideal to secure the tool in the bb with a longer screw and some large washers.

im going to pick up a bb tool tomorrow so i will give your advice a whirl. thankyou

Re:

I don't have a bench vise, so I use a long extension to my ratcheting wrench (i.e., long steel pipe) to get the job done. An extra set of hands can be invaluable using this technique.

Assuming it's not Italian threaded, the drive side cup is reversed threaded, i.e. it unscrews clockwise.

Non-drive side unscrews counterclockwise like 99.9% of threads in the world.

You may already know that, but I don't know how much experience you have with these things so I'm throwing it out there on the basis that it might help you, or if not, someone else.

Grumps

If the bottom bracket axle is hollow you can use a rear qr skewer to hold everything in place while you use a big spanner on the bb tool.

I had to use this technique to remove an old bb out of my dmr

If you don't have any joy, I'm in Retford and have had success with the long steel pipe for extra leverage. Drop me a pm if you want a hand.

Re:

How can you be sure it's stuck if you don't have the tool to remove it?
Get the proper tool for the job and give it a go, follow the advice above, lots of brute force and extra leverage will go a long way.
In my experience most old bottom brackets will come out with the right tool and perseverence, for the ones that really won't budge then the thread linked to above should sort it out.
