Strange xtr m900 question

Having never owned anything as modern as " combi " brake / shifters, i have a question.

The perch on the back of m900 levers, has a similar hole configuration to thumb shifters...ie 4 holes. Im only going from pictures.

Do thumbshifters fit on? All be they upside down? ( wow, that takes me back to a confusing period 30 years ago) Or are the holes differing distances apart?

Purely an academic question.

You think brake/ shifter combo is 'modern'? Its 30 years plus!

Mountain LX had levers and thumbshifters (Exage Country/ trail too but was 6spd) and Exage Mountain

Suntour did a combined shifter/ brake and so did Sachs

XTR / XT/ DX all used the same lever mount in their last DX/ XT M735 incarnation with different finish (matt for DX/ XT and grey for the XTR) - there is an earlier XT/ DX 'push/push' style lever too pre XTR Rapidfire

The lever mount itself could be modified with a bit of spacing and strategically placed holes to fit a thumby but then you also need the cable stop/ adjuster

Its a lot of faff!

The Mountain LX combo uses a different mount to the DX XT thumbshifter (there are also 200GS and some far rarer midrange thumbies) but is reasonable despite the levers being resin

Re:

So the 4 pin holes on the back of 900 xtr mount are different spacing to the pins on, say, m732 xt thumbies?

Im aware of combination shifters, just never had a set. Mainly as i never rated xt thumbies, having gone over to xc pro and never looked back, and always mixed and matched these with differing brake levers ( xc pro, ritchey or m733s).

As i said its only a theoretical question, as from images, the holes / pins look similar, but without scale / interface / interruption info into hard to tell.

Thanks for the reply btw.

One of the pins on M900 is offset whereas the XT are equally spaced. Typical Shimano pissing about with kit so it can’t be interchangeable..
