Steel Frames in the Tour de France

Following an argument in another forum, I've been trying to find out the last year a steel frame was ridden in the Tour de France - even by a single rider on a single stage.

From what I've been able to establish most teams were on aluminium, carbon, or titanium by the mid nineties. Team GAN (which became Crédit Agricole after the end of the Tour in 199:cool: were issued with lugged steel Merckx frames for the 1998 season, but although the team portraits show these bikes, I haven't been able to confirm that they were ridden in the TdF, and I've found a suggestion that Boardman at least was riding a titanium Merckx built by Litespeed, like the majority of the Motorola/Caloi squad in 1995-1996.

It's said to be not that unusual for pro riders to have a favourite custom frame painted in team colours, so there's always the possiblity that some riders were on steel even when the official team bikes were not. So what I'm looking for is evidence of a steel frame in the Tour in 1998 or later. A photograph would be great, but failing that, a newspaper or magazine article, eye-witness testimony, or even a plausible rumour would do.

How about mapei riding Colnago C40 ?
A C40's carbon, innit?

I've had a quick look, but I haven't found any obviously steel Colnagos in the Tour after about the mid nineties. When do you think Mapei might still have been on steel?

Great question. Would also be interested to know the answer!

When was the latest tdf ride on stell you can find?

I'm fairly sure motorola rode merckx mx leaders (badged merckx or caloi) right through into the mid 90s. As you mentioned above.

They certainly were issued with them as a team through 1995-96, but I'm not sure who actually rode them in the TdF. Armstrong and Steve Bauer had been riding Litespeeds in Merckx paint in '93, and later that year Litespeed began fabricating Merckx's titanium bikes officially. It looks to me as though most of the Motorola grand tour squad were on these titanium bikes in '95-'96, when they were painted "Caloi - by Eddy Merckx" due to a sponsorship arrangement.

I don't have an absolute latest steel-in-the-Tour ID: I've been working on the assumption that somebody from GAN must have been riding one on at least one stage in '98 and looking for evidence of that, but I haven't found anything watertight so far. I haven't kept any old magazines from the period, and there isn't much on line that I can find. It was just before broadband and cheap digital cameras, so pictures tend to be low res.

The info on merckx/caloi/merckx/litespeed sounds right. From memory some motorola riders certainly rode the leaders in some of the classics, if not the tour. Nothing to prove it though.

Got a load of old tdf stages on vhs back at my parents. Maybe if I have a spare week I can go through them....
