single speed???????

my brother has just assembled a single speed salsa which looks nice, its got a very clean weightless look about it which i love, but he just cant compete with me and my geared bike, he said some trails are just un rideable!..(probably through lack of gears) is he destined to ride on tarmac & towpaths) or should he get his old stumpy back out, and stop being such a weight concise fasion victim??? :?
