Since I built my fluted tubing Olmo using primarily a Shimano 105 groupset with dt shifters I've been vaguely dissatisfied that I didn't use Campag as the marque deserved. However, the decision was a compromise as I like indexed shifting but Campag never made a good indexed dt system. Unfortunately, Campag did a jump from dt shifters to 8 speed Ergos without developing Ergos suitable for a 126mm oln cassette system. Ok, I could get the rear forks cold set but the frame is too rare to risk that, so I've been looking for a lateral solution.
Someone here suggested that I try to mate a 7 speed Shimano cassette with a set of 8 speed Ergos as they both utilise a 5mm sprocket spacing. Hmmmmm.......that has possibilities, so I managed to get a NOS set of 8 speed Veloce Ergos and this morning I took the old 105 brake levers off to substitute the shiny new system. I then found that the Veloce front mech I had in my parts bin is the wrong clamp size and the Mirage rear mech I had lying around has a very sticky action. Oh b****r, what now. In frustration I just connected the cables up to the 105 front and rear, simply to tidy it up with the full intention of putting the bike back in the shed until I can get a good pair of mechs.
HOWEVER, I thought I'd make sure the Ergos actually did go click when they were supposed to as they've been in the box for 20 years or so. Well slap me with a kipper and call me Simon if they didn't just go clickety click at the right moments AND actually indexed perfectly!
I'd expected the Campag levers and mechs to work with a Shimano 7 speed cassette, but all the information I have found states that you can't use a S7 rear mech with C8 levers as the pull ratios are different. Just to make sure, I've taken the bike out for a 10 mile ride and it shifts as slick as any of my other machines.
Now it's not staying that way, I want a proper Campag setup, but this has possibilities for anyone who wants to try a mix and match.
I've got a lovely pair of wheels with Campag Record hubs and Wolber Profil 18 rims in the shed and they will take a Shimano spaced 7 speed screw on block. All I need now is a pair of good 8 speed Campag mechs, anyone got anything that would do the job? Veloce would be nice!
