Shimano IG query

Hi all,

Seeing as I have a new IG chain and new IG chainrings waiting to go on my old 97 Rockhopper, thoughts have turned to the cassette.

My (original) 11-30T 7 speed IG cassette is a bit burred up. I could get the needle files out, but it's probably past its best. Thing is, I've only seen one 11-30T IG60 cassette available and the US retailer wants $80 plus $30 postage (plus customs charges), so a hefty price tag for originality.

So, from reading the internet I gather that HG cassettes will do the job with an IG chain, but I'd much rather get the same number of teeth and silver sprockets (to be honest I'd quite like an IG cassette but can't justify spending £100 on it!)

Any ideas amongst you clever and well connected people what my best options are?

Cheers

I would go for 11-28 as the jumps in the cog to cog are a little bit nicer (for me anyway) under 7 speed, currently £20 for an IG60 on ebay
Don't get too hung up about having to have the 30 tooth cog.
It would be cheaper to probably drop a few teeth on the granny ring if you really needed it.

I cannot remember how much thicker the IG sprockets are compared to the HG at the time, they needed to be thicker to allow for the down shifting ramp. But 8 speed and all started to have them and they still used the 8 speed HG chain.

This is what shimano used to say about the chains... (just for interest)

If you use a HG chain with a 7-speed IG cassette (CS-IG50 and CS-IG60) the rear derailleur adjustment becomes more critical. One significant compatibility issue is always avoid using a HG chain with an IG-only crank set. Why? The chain will release from the large (outer) chain rings too easily while in the large rear cog. It may be potentially dangerous if the chain drops off the outer ring without shifting the lever, under full power.

or go the other way with 12-32 and the SRAM PG730 ?
