Hey, I'm looking at buying a set of wheels with shimano centre lock discs... My question is are they only compatible with shimano brakes or are the universal? Please help. Cheers Rob

Ah right... That's people on Facebook for you. They were saying its a different type of pad? That only shimano use for their brakes and rotors? Just thought I'd check.

Not quite as simple as Fagin makes out.

Some of the lower end and some of the upper end Shimano rotors are only to be used with resin pads. Mid range ones can generally be used with either resin or sintered pads. Look for "resin pad only" on the rotor.

Then there's size, as far as I know Shimano rotors only come in 160,180 or 200mm sizes so if your brakes are designed for 165, 185, 203 or 205mm rotors then you have s problem.

I think the hubs are Deore so I'd guess I would use Deore 180mm rotors. I've got some Hayes brakes I'd be using.. If possible.

Loads of Shimano say resin only, makes bugger all difference in actual use, except maybe they'll wear out in five years instead of six.
Stainless steel is basically stainless steel.

OK, simple, I have centre lock discs but because of the hubs (Red Metal) can only use the cheaper rotors with rivets close to the centre.
In six years I am on my second set of rotors.
I've used Shimano resin pads (OE - pretty rubbish), Shimano organic,Superstar sintered, carbon and organic, Ashima organic, Carboncycles sintered and organic (although I think they are the same as Superstar)
They have all worked perfectly well, and the rotors have coped with it all.

So no idea what the difference is but I'm happy to use them.

Shimano and dt swiss are the only 2 brands i know of that make centre lock hubs. Good news is they are compatible.

Regarding rotors and callipers, generally both work. The 160 vs 165 mm etc is not usually an issue, we're talking 2.5 mm difference between pad and disc and with post mount you can aleays fit a washer to move the calliper outwards if required.

Only be aware that formula r1 and rx callipers are a bit wank as the do not work with hope saw rotors as the rivets foul the calliper.
