Shimano 1050 rd? Shimano 1055 rd?

And now I have my own 105 question. I've just got a pair of 1056 STI shifters, and the left one is marked 'triple' - and there's me not even realising that there was a triple option with this groupset. Will this shifter also work with a double setup? I appreciate this is a rather niche question...

Yes, but the trick is that you need to use the low (granny gear) and middle clicks, not the middle and high.

If you use the lower two clicks, the cable tension and stop on the derailleur will make the third, high, click on the shifter unreachable, as if not there. if you use the higher clicks, you will end up with slack cable.

Ah, that is exactly what I need to know. Thank you very much. I was not looking forward to cabling it all up and then it potentially not working.

I'd disagree with this from experience. You are correct when you say you will end up with a slack cable when you fully depress the lever. But without using the the middle and high, you won't have the trim (the minor, in-between click) that lets you ride the big ring with the bigger sprockets without any cage rub. The middle shift doesn't have a trim

Thanks for the input. I guess I’ll see how I get on, I wouldn’t tend to use the bigger sprockets in the big ring anyway, so that might not be an issue. I suspect a bit of trial and error will be required.
