Shimano 105 Pedals with Toeclips

I'm a chain and some cables away from finishing my first ever(!) road bike. She's sporting the triangular shaped Shimano 105 pedals with toeclips and strap and at first testing (obviously difficult with no chain), as they insist on hanging plum upside down, they seem virtually impossible to get my foot into and not something I'd like to divert all my attention to when setting off on busy city streets. The straps are definitely wide enough to accommodate my shoes, so is there knack, or am I being a dullard?

The little triangle at the bottom of the pedal is used to flick the pedal upright by dragging your foot across it..using something like SPD's is completely acceptable for non-L'eroica stuff

Using that technique works better if you wear the right shoes ie old-style road shoes.Anything with tread or that is too wide makes it almost impossible to get into or out of the straps!
How about trying an early clip less pedal?

Thanks for the info folks. As I'll just be whizzing around the city, I think a nice flat pedal will be winging its way to me soon - too many junctions and traffic lights and other opportunities for embarrassment!
