Servicing 1994 LX headset

Was fairly smooth when still fitted to the bike but filthy so taken apart and cleaned up.

Has 2 "BC2" cartridge bearings - not sealed. Were full of crap and old grease so I gave them a soak in solvent. Seeing as they're not properly sealed I was half tempted to just clean them super carefully and squirt as much grease in them as I can...

Anyone got any experience?

As far as I know replacement bearings are not available so cleaning them up as best you can is the only option.

Had a bright idea while drifting off to sleep... I think this could be a job for spray grease. Not normally a big fan of this stuff but this is one of those exceptions I think...

I have no direct experience, but if you can find a replacement bearing with the same configuration and outer dimensions, it should work, try these:

With regard to the spray grease, is this so that you can get it inside the bearing?

If so, you can melt grease, put some in an old saucepan, or something like a baked been tin that you've washed out, then gently warm it on the hob until it melts, like a knob of butter would, and becomes liquid, drop the parts in the liquid grease, take it off the heat and allow the grease to cool and re-solidify. Once the grease has cooled re-solidified you can pick out the parts, wipe off the excess and they will be completely packed with grease.

I think I'm still for trying the spray grease.

The heat idea is a nice one, but it might melt the plastic bits...
