Seat post stuck in frame

I need some advice. I have a steel frame and the alloy seat post is stuck in place. 99% sure its got a shim fitted. What are my options to remove it? Trying first of all soaking it in oil and seeing if that works.

are you happy to sacrifice the post?......soak it first, extra torque can be added by using the saddle or drilling the post to add a lever of some kind......cutting the top off the post will allow sections to be cut out of the bit left in the frame using a hacksaw blade to remove that way.......acids that will dissolve the post are available but that is pretty hardcore and will need the proper kit......you will get other suggestions over the next day or two here, one of which will suit you and work ok.....good luck!

You could do worse than follow Sheldon's advice. Try giving "stuck seat post" a search too, this topic has been covered a lot of times.

damn lg.......how could i forget your impressively clever method?.......thats got to be a starting point!....

What have you tried so far?

If the bike is stripped, the simple method of putting the post in a bench vice and using the frame as leverage could be all you need.

Been working through some of the Sheldon Brown ideas just at the moment. 100% sure that the post is fitted with a shim as well, dont know if that effects anything?

LGB, I will remember that. I had this problem and as the thing would not shift by brute force and I was going to paint the frame anyway I had welding torch applied and melted the post out.

To attack the ally chemically I believe you need drain cleaner (caustic soda aka sodium hydroxide) as this attacks the aluminium oxide that is causing the problem. A concentrated ammonia solution might also work but you will need ventilation.

Also the dry ice method that Sheldon mentions should work if you can hold of some and some good gloves.

washing soda can be use to disolve the post - this was done successfuly by someone on cycle chat forum.

but try the usual stuff first.

clean the join between post and frame so that penetrting fluid (e.g. plusGas NOT WD40) can seep in - use a scriber or other pointy object for that.

the apply the pentrating fluid - you can make a collar around to keep the fluid in place but it will disolve the glue on sellotap/insuation tape.

use the saddle as leverage and try to twist - you may need vice or second person to hold the frame.

if you are willing to sacrifice the post (I had on snap in the frame). then it is possible to drill a hole i nthe post and the use a steel rod or drift to lever agaisnt the frame to push the post out. (hoe I got mine out).
