Saved from scrap - mid 90’s GT outpost

Saw this chucked on the top of a skip on my way to work this morning, only around 200 yards away from my home. The owners were happy to let me take it and give it a new lease of life.

A quick strip, clean and refresh should have this back on the road in no time. :)

I was pretty eager to get cracking on this and put in a few hours yesterday evening/night. It needed the usual cables/chain/tyres etc but also had to replace the canti’s as despite the metal parts being in really good condition the plastic spring covers were all shot so they wouldn’t work. Luckily I had a very similar spare set so made a good 4 out of the 8 I had.
Went out for a ride this morning with the wife and it performed so nicely - it’s amazing how these low end bikes and components can perform when they’re freshly serviced and set up.
I couldn’t bring myself to refit the clunky Altus rear mech! Madness when you’re upgrading to the dizzy heights of Acera X kit - ooh, fancy..

I’ve just raised the stem and dropped the seatpost down a smidge for ultimate comfort and painted the stem to smarten it up a bit.

All in the bike probably owes me £5-10 plus the spare parts which I had already, it’s a very cheap bike which should last years and most importantly it’s another one saved from being scrapped. I’ve really enjoyed refurbishing this one!
