Salsa Pro-moto stem

The perfect one.

I'm sure there are a few bidders from here already, who are now annoyed you've drawn attention to it!

I just dont get it.....so its got a picture of a chilli on it....so has my fridge!

Its just steel stem, had a few bitd, they are no better than a ritchey force or tioga prestige....

I just dont understand.....the decals are available if you really need a picture of a chilli on your bike to complete it!

I can just think of lots more exciting and better engineered parts to buy for .....well its going to be north of £200 i should think.

Some stuff has engineering pedigree, finesse, beauty or even low weight, that warrants that kind of spend. A steel stem....the same as the rest....infact worse materials then a £40 real prestige tioga......just dont get it.

But hey.....its your dollar and if that's what floats your boat, more power to you.

Your my wife now Dave.....

Scarcity? Especially in this size/configuration. The fact it's a classic design from a bonafide legend of the "sport"? Also, seeing as how it's a roller stem, it's hard to argue it's not superior from an engineering standpoint to many other stems from the same era. Also, it's just one of those things. Some people love them. I'm one of them. And I recently paid about the same for what I'm sure this one will end up going for, for the exact same model.

Albeit, in even nicer condition.

And I'll tell you what, the happiness I got from just looking at the thing when it arrived, never mind riding it, was worth the extra $50 it cost me compared to some of it's so-called equivalents.

Horses for courses, strokes for folks, Etc. Of course.

Just curious, and not trying to implode any shred of a good reputation I may have amongst you all, but is there a bit of infatuation with this stem because it was a bit harder to come by in Europe? I've also noticed an interest on this site in brands that I didn't perceive to be of boutique interest in the U.S. GT, for example: just didn't hold a candle to other aluminum like Klein, Yeti, Ventana. Also there's a lot of drooling over Marin Cycles on here, which just didn't compare to other steel like Bontrager and Ibis. Bicyclists in the Bay Area back in the 90s didn't drool over GT and Marin, at least that was my perception. As with Salsa...not drool worthy when you have Bontragers floating about. Just some interesting observations.

So I kinda see what @Tootyred is talking about. Well now I'm the snippy wife....(tag, you're it). 😜

Well, that doesn't add up to me.

I get the Marin and GT part (larger manufacturers, Etc), not boutique, independent, handcrafted companies like the others you mentioned. But Salsa?

Not drooled over or drool worthy?

Judging by the big NorCal collectors and their collections, Salsa seems just as lusted over as any of the other builders you mentioned.

And Ross has to be one of the funniest, seemingly personable dudes in the industry... or was, when he was still part of it.

Weird to compare it to Bontrager, and negatively, when they basically go hand-in-hand, too...

As for the stem: I think they trade for just as high a value over here.

As I say, mine cost more!

Oh, and lastly, yeah, it's the motherland of MTB, but there is more to vintage mountain bikes than just what was popular in the Bay Area at the time. I say this as someone who loves bikes from that part of the world over all others, and finds that GT's especially leave me cold.

The reason people are drawn to different bikes from different places is what I think makes this collecting thing interesting. My assumption is that people's feelings towards certain manufacturers has a lot to do with distrubtion: either you saw stuff at your local shop or beneath the arse of a local legend and wanted the same, or you didn't and wanted it for the opposite reason anyway! Because it was hard to find and thus elusive.

Elusive doesn't translate to good.......plenty of examples of truly terrible products in the world made expensive by rarity.

Sadly, coming form a background of engineering , I just cant see the "added value" in this stem.

There are some fantastic, progress leaping, beautifully engineered mtb products around.....and yes, some were rubbish in terms of actual real world functionality and durability! Topline / grafton cranks and original hope hubs spring to mind.

But a salsa stem has none of that....its just steel stem. Yes its got a roller, yes its rare, yes its got a chilli on it......and if thats what makes your day, as i said before, im glad for you.

But it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things......and frankly this stem would be even more expensive if we all wanted it 😂
