Rubbish parts that command a premium

Strange that XTR has cropped up.
It was always meant to be a cutting edge, pro race use only groupset. For which it was ideal. Didn't do anything that much better than XT, bit sharper shifting, bit lighter (about 300g for the whole group iirc) slightly spanglier finish. (I had 950/2 and now a mix of 960/970)
But then it started cropping up on everything. Trail bikes, weekend warrior bikes, shiny bikes (modified cranks on single speeds. WTF was that all about!)
And broke.

That's why shimano are doing trail and race versions of everything.
People will still fit the race stuff to their trail bikes, but they've got no excuse when it snaps.

Re:

Im consistently shocked at the price people sell old magazines for.£5 for an 18 year old MBUK?!I had a library of these and gave them away for free a few months back to a few enthusiasts and I refused to take a penny.Christ, its as bad the train set/Star Wars guys and their packaging nonsense.

Shimano themselves have given in. In 2011 they officially repositioned XTR in the range as the top flight trail groupset and for marketing purposes at least no longer have a competition oriented MTB gruppo.

thinking about the original question though,

Pauls rear mechs/front mechs

onza brakes, have seen alot crack but people still pay reasonable amount for them

manitou frames, i can understand people want them but buying them knowing they risk buying a cracked frame or one that is likely to crack if ridden alot seems crazy to me unless it's for a wall hanger and if that is the case the price would have to be low as in reality it becomes useless for it's intended purpose.

:D

You might as well add Pace frames to the list

Re:

Girvin flexstems. They were dire, an answer to a question no one asked. Much derided and unloved then, now go for daft money.

This paragraph has surprised me.

The standard Ali Flex Stem back in 1990 sold for £39.95 and I have yet to see NOS ones priced any higher on the bay. 2nd hand ones average £20.

The reason they were made was to give a bit of movement just as suspension seatposts and the Allsop softride system did. They were never meant to be a suspension system as such, in fact they couldn't be a viable suspension system as the unsprung weight would be considerably higher than the sprung weight so the question was how do you provide a small degree of isolation from heavy vibration with out changing the vehicle completely? and they answered it reasonably well.

Spot on - agreed. About the only thing iffy about them was the upwards pivot when trying to lift the front wheel.

except for xtr race, which exists in the 980 and the 9000 line up. And is really available, and well marketed.
So they didn't quite give up. More like they spotted a way to make more money.

Re:

I would say 29"
First 700 or 29" bike were hybrids between road and mtb bikes in the beginning of 90ies and were considered as rubbish.
Now, they are fashion …as still ugly
