Rubbish parts that command a premium

STX mechs selling for £25. Mediocre steel frames being punted at silly prices.
So that covers 90% and more of the bikes on here........

Girvin flexstems. They were dire, an answer to a question no one asked. Much derided and unloved then, now go for daft money.

Full squidge Marins. Since about 1995 Marin have been living off the name, and none of their full squidge bikes has ever been competitive in weight, ride and performance to this very day, but people are prepared to pay silly money for them.

Turbo saddles. A tenner in Hellfrauds in the lates 80s, 50or more nicker for a very smart example now. Good saddles, but that's ridiculous, especially when the charge bucket is an exact replica for under a tenner if you shop about (and also available in funky finishes if you like the classic cut but with contemporary colours).

The Retrobike parts market is a funny place that seems to exist outside the realms of the laws of physics. Stuff that was tat then is still tat.today but people fall over each other to pay big moolah while good stuff is overlooked. And don't get me started on the strange meaning that "NOS" seems to take on in this parallel universe...

Re:

Alpinestars frames?

Everyone I know who has had an aluminium one is sad that theirs has cracked or is poorer because they paid to repair it (and maybe respray it too).

Yes the colours were very Nineties but they're a bit fragile compared to other contemporary kit.

Campag bits - supply and demand I think, they're quite nice parts and don't come up often.

Boutique skewers eg Ringle: Sheldon tells you why here http://sheldonbrown.com/skewers.html.

Brooks saddles - tried one, then sold it and had the surgery to repair the damage done.

XTR

It didnt have the desired effects that I had hoped:

No women fell at my feet

Certain doors to life didnt open, in fact they were double locked

Small children didnt come rushing out to cheer as I went by

...but Dale Winton winked at you as you rode by.

We used to ride as a pack around Sandy Heath bitd and he was a frequenter of those parts, looking for a different type of 'ride'. He had a nice Convertible Jag though.

I'm taking umbrage at Fat Chance on this list :( Plenty of affordable FC frames and bikes about but they were always well made, ride great and painted properly and Campag stuff is built to last. The list of overpriced junk is endless.

Re:

I don't know about Marin, but the only frame I'm aware of with a Rock Shox [RS1] rear end was a prototype Miyata ridden by Greg Herbold...
