is it a bad idea to fit a road stem to a mountain bike with front suspension? (for XC riding, no jumping or trix)

one school of thought is that road riding does not involve many bumps whearas mtbing does so bad idea .... but then these are soaked up by the suspenstion forks so maybe not so bad?

Depends on the stem I guess. Lots of modern stems do both.

I have a ControlTech road stem fitted to one of my MTB. It's a -5 degree stem turned upside down so the decals are the wrong way up. Also the bolts are on the wrong side compared to regular stems. Works good for me.

i've got a 0 rise syncros road stem on my rigid.

no problems as yet with 15ish stone of cumbersome moron pushing down on the bars

In my experience they will do fine, as long as you're not using anything super light. This goes for xc riding. Wouldn't try it on a downhill bike though.
