Hi all,

Putting my first Road bike together, I have a question about pedals.

Can anyone tell me which road style clipless pedals use/d the Shimano SPD mountain bike cleats?

If possible I want to be using my mtb shoes, not wishiing to buy another pair shoes for road cleats.

I know I can fit regular mtb spd's but would rather have pedals that look Roady, Retro even better. For a 1985 bike (spd's came out in early 90's?)

found some wellgo 713's but they didn't get great reveiws, bearings wearing prematurely, apparently.

Shimano PD-A520 and PD530 are possibly what you're after. A530s have the advantage of being spd on one side and platform on the other so you can ride in normal shoes. I've got a set of Wellgo R120B which are similar to the A530 in that they're spd one side and platform the other.

I checked out the shimano 520 and 530 and 600 a few days back and there's just something about them I don't like, they look too big perhaps?

The Wellgo R120B I had not seen, they look great. How are you getting on with yours, have you had them long/covered many miles?

They're on my occasional ride so I haven't done many miles at all on them so can't really comment their durability. But for what I've used them for they've been pretty good. I wanted something that I could use for spd and normal shoes that weren't too clunky looking and they tick those boxes. I picked some up from CRC when they were on offer at £20 and was waiting for them to drop back down to that price so I could get some more for my everyday ride.

I use the 520's , like you can't justify another pair of shoes, and they work well.

I've got the old ultgra pedals for the moutain bike cleat from the days beofre the look patent issues were resolved and whilst very neat they don't offer as much support and I get hot spots in my feeet after about 30 miles.

Or going back a bit more, around 1992-3 Shimano ran Look fit, Clip&Strap and SPD pedals, before SPD-R turned up...

The Dura-Ace PD-7410:

I use the original MTB ones on road bikes, a lot easier to clip into than the single sided ones. Especially useful when trying to get away from traffic lights etc. without wobbling and bashing your ankle etc. I also think that they are a lot more 'substantial' and harder wearing.

When you're riding no one can tell they're MTB ones.

Pedals only look "road"beacuse people mainly use one style of pedals for road and another for MTB's. Personally I use Crank Bros pedals on all my bike because for their 4 sided entry.
