might seem daft but is it better to have a large frame bike with seat lower or smaller bike with seat higher or just personal prefrance

Re:

I'm pretty new to road bikes, so I prefer the more modern look with a bit more seat post showing, but it is all about reach, too much and your back muscles won't thank you.

I'm a little over 6' 1" and tend to ride 56 frames, but I know more traditional riders who are shorter than me and ride bigger frames, with very little seatpost showing.

If you already have the frame, do a quick rough build just to get the feel for the dimensions and whether it will fit you.

Here are a couple of mine that I find really fit me well.

I can't find any side on shots of the Rourke, but the stem is 110mm on both and all my bikes have the same saddle height.

will do measured my old bike and the top tube is 54 cm with a 120mm stem
new one is 57 cm so if i get a smaller 80mm stem am i right in thinking the reach should be same or there abouts

Re:

I very basic terms yes, at least it will be pretty similar.

Some of the reach depends on the bars. I have a Basso which has the same top tube length and stem as my other bikes, but the bars are a different shape, making the overall distance to the hoods longer, so watch that.

If you can get the front of seatpost to centre of stem distance similar, then I think you'll have a perfectly rideable bike.

I'm sure this is not how the multi million pound 'bike fit' industry go about their business.
