The nut (and the rest of the aluminium parts) are 7000 series aluminium, and should be strong and robust. However 7000 series alloy can be quite corrosion prone if not protected by anodising.

I have seen some "copies" made in 6063 (the old BS. HE9), which is more ductile, and good for formed parts, less so for machined parts. Could be these you've seen. I also don't know of the alloy of the Bici/ Ofmega clones that are out there either.

Did you used to work for then or is it just an interest?
I've had two nuts which have pitted during anodising, others have been ok. They wern't 6063 or 6061 as those are probably the easiest to anodise.
Perhaps copies then!

Just an enthusiast ;-)
Sounds like it's some sort of copy as obviously the factory stuff anodised very well. The parts are simple enough to easily copy though. I've had poor results with 2000 series alloy, or as you say, cast alloys- heaven knows what you have!

I bought a pair of the darker blue bitd. Still have the front, but a mate overtightened and snapped the axle of the rear. Thinking it was goosed I tossed it in the bin, D'oh!
