Rescuing a Pace RC200 F4 Frame

Hello all..!!

im new to retrobike and must say wHAT a brilliant thread. Its even more interesting as i find myself in the same dilemma as papillion did, i have a RC200 F5 fame that has a stress fracture/crack near the BB. :(

I have been in contact with a company that do Tig and laser welding who say the can sort out the issue. Now the dilemma is that after seeing this awesome thread im in two minds.??

If i get it repaired by just welding the crack then im sure over (short) time it will fail again? and im back to square 1, but if i get the whole seat tube replaced for a more stronger one then this should in theory be the best route for longevity?

I was hoping that Dan could reproduce his magic on my poorly frame?

any thoughts on what i should do?

Hi, you trying to profit on my bad luck..(kidding)

If you up for a swap and some cash your way we can do something,? My frame is definitely salvageable and have a company lined up to repair it.

Re:

Excellent thread this one.

So, Dan - would you shy away from repairing a Manitou HT…?

Would need a new head tube, but whats that when you're replacing seat tubes etc on Pace frames…?!

Let me know, I have a good candidate for surgery.

Back to the Pace!

Not done a whole headtube, but there are a lot of Manitous, Nishikis, Paces and Marins out there...

All the best,

Re:

Certainly no problem actually replacing headtube. Cut out and fit a new one like I did with the seat tube.

Problems arrive with the real need to post-weld heat treat and the consequent risk of over-treating the existing frame welds. Otherwise, might need to anneal the whole thing post-weld and start again.
The jury seems to be our on whether it's necessary for 7005 repairs, but it is pretty much a requirement for anything 6061.

All the best,

Sorry but can I hijack this convo alittle? Dan is ther anything you could do for me regarding my pace frame? I would much prefer you to have a go at it then send it off to some welding company.
