Reproducing 1989 Diamond Back decals

Frotz

Dirt Disciple
Hi,

I've managed to reproduce the decals from the Ascent EX, as mentioned last week viewtopic.php?f=1&t=295828 and today I finished the Axis Team! I've got an Apex frame that I'm going to do next. Does anyone have an Axis that I can have a look at, or buy?

Best,
Andre.

I have a 1989 Axis with those decals.
If you search in the readers bikes section you should find it.

Re:

You mentioned smoke in the other post.
A smoke effect we used on paint in the 70's was acetylene smoke.
Just lit a torch, wafted the acetylene smoke over the tank or
whatever and cleared over it.

Yes!!!! I've seen your Axis. Have all the pics downloaded three years ago. I wish I could see it up close and personal! I'd like to copy those decals too in order to re-create the bike. I'd especially like to get a magnified look at the paint job! The Axis Team has a similar marble technique, but with grey metallic paint/clearcoat. What's it like on the Axis in black?

The graphics on the Team are not decals, they seem to be colour applied directly to the frame! Is this the same thing on your Axis? Also, most of the graphics are scaled down from the Ascent EX, even though they're the same frame size (20.5".)

Can we work together to get the graphics properly copied? Please PM me any time!

Best,
Andre.

I've heard of the acetylene torch thing but thought they used it to ignite the clearcoat/paint? I hadn't thought of them simply applying the smoke to the (still wet?) paint or clearcoat!

Have you seen the 1989 Diamond Backs in person to compare the effect you created with the one they're using?

I've got some close-up pics of one of my frames. (Attached is much bigger than it appears, download it to have a proper look at it.) Please take a look and tell me how it compares to the results with your technique!

Thank you very much,
Andre.

Re:

No I haven't seen the DB.
I haven't done it since around 1976!
When you burn straight acetylene you get a very plasticy soot. You just
wave the torch around till the smoke on the panel looks OK, you clear it,
or candy over it.
You do it on dry paint.
I would be surprised if people don't still do it, have a look on google images or youtube.
You could try other smoke sources, candles or paraffin lamp?

The Axis is in a crawl-space in the house and is a pain to get to.
I will try and dig it out in the next few weeks. Send me a PM if I forget!
