Renewing chrome plating

Has anyone ever tried something like this on old components?

I'm wondering if it would be OK if you don't want a particularly hard wearing finish rather than splashing out on proper re-plating.

What is wrong with it? If it is starting to rust, try using water and tin foil first. Worked a treat on my forks.

i doubt if that motorcycle in the picture was done with that. if its brushed on ? ? if its dunked in a solution that sounds a bit more believable .pardon,you did say old components.

I think we're beyond that stage .

As PeterPerfect said on my restoration thread the Gran Sport mechs aren't massively pricey although they do seem to vary quite wildly looking at past eBay sales so I might just get another one and keep this for spares. Having taken it apart now it's not in proper working order anyway as one of the pulley bearing cones is split. There are other parts from the bike which are worth saving though like the pedals and the barrels on those could do with re-plating.
