Removing crown race

Aaldert

Kona Fan
Hello,

I have a few old forks and they have the crown race still in place.
I would like to remove them, how should I do that?
Can or should I do it myself anyway, or would it be better to let get it done in my local bike shop?

Cheers

if you dont want the crown race, just flip the fork upside down, and tap the race off with a hammer and chisel. go slowly and work around the race as much as you can to avoid damaging the seat

big flat blade screwdriver and a variable pressure applicator (VPA) is all you need. tap all round gently till it comes off.

My way too

Sod the big chisel.you could damage it :?

I lot of crowns have a dimple either side to get under the race. I bit of heat on the race and prise up a bit over each side and normally they come off quite easily.

Or a big flat srewdriver and a hammer :D

Thanks for your answers.

I have never heard of a "variable pressure applicator" I can imagine what it is, but does anyone have a photo of it?

As for the heat, how do you apply the heat to the crown race?

lickle ickle blow torch

i have one of these, it has a blow torch / heat gun / hot knife

Done it!

It works!

The VPA is a very versatile tool! In combination with a screwdriver, no crown race can resist.

Thanks guys.
