Just wondering, usually we have race bikes with Sprint rims, were there any clinchers from 70ies to early 80ies which were fit as race rims with a streamlined thin profile?
Were there any 'aero' rims in the 70's? 'Clinchers' came in late 70's with the Michelin Elan and an early Mavic box section rim (MA2?) Narrow aero rims started in the mid/late 80's I think. I had a pair of Weinmann 'aero' shape rims which I was going to fit with Specialised Turbo 'S' slick tyres and use on the racing tandem but, for various reasons, it never happened. Did Assos make a clincher rim back then?
Personally I would use a modern rim like the h plus son tb14 which come in polished silver and is 14mm deep. I looks similar in profile to the mavic module e but is made to a far better standard than any rim from the 70 ' s I have seen.
Thanks guys.
I have Wolber Profil aero type rims with Suntour Superbe mk1 low flange hubs and Tubs.
The rims aren't period correct.
Anyway I wanted a pair of clinchers for this so
If you wanted to build a clincher wheel set for a Raleigh Pro from '78 with Suntour Superbe high flange hubs - and te rest of the bike was period correct - what would you use?
Modern H Plus Son TB14
Mavic Module E
Mavic MA2
Wilber Mod 58
Depends how often you want to ride the bike. If it is a daily a modern rim if it is not maybe someting period. clincher rims from that era are not all that great imo.
