Retro Newbie
I’m in the midst of my first bike (re)-build and would appreciate some advice on a few points.
The bike is a ~1992 Kuwahara M4.5 Savage. Between the worn-out drivetrain and the horizontal dropouts, it’s a prime candidate for a singlespeed conversion.
The wheels are in good shape, except the spoke nipple screws (under the rim tape) are quite rusty. Should I work on removing the corrosion, or do I need to replace the screws?
I’m of two minds about the brakes. Right now it has a set of Shimano 200GS cantis with fairly new cables. I also have a pretty vintage set of Dia Compe 980 cantis/levers on hand, but that would mean new cables. Go all in? Or stay boring/pragmatic with the current brakes?
The sealed bottom bracket works fine, but I haven’t been able to loosen it to regrease the threads. Leave as-is or have the LBS unscrew it?
