re-issue parts/bikes

This is a topic I have been pondering for a long time, and was just wondering what other people thought (could like it, hate or whatever)...

Just I come from a running/basketball background before I started MTB many years ago and am a fair bit into the retro sneaker thing where the companies have realised there is a huge market to cash in on, back 10 years ago they made some very good re-issue stuff, these days its mostly rubbish...

Now I know from time to time old companies/names get dug up and people get excited, but the new result leaves people none too excited (I will admit me re-issue Zaskar does make me happy... well i hope it will when i ever get to build it up and ride it)

but i was thinking what if say Shimano did an exact re-release of the M900 XTR groupset, Kona did an exact replica Explosif, Rock Shox with a Mag21... that sort of thing. Now I know many would hate that, not original or real or whatever, and I fully understand that, but if some companies could do a good job of re-making parts, it would make availability and also longevity of some parts/frames more realistic. Just knowing you could order it and it would actually work.

I don't know, part of me thinks this would be brilliant and the rest feels, na bad idea (I also know how much I have spent on shoes, buying all the stuff I wanted back in the day)...

But waht does any one think, would there be a market?

Or will people now track me down an belt me with Moby post for thinking of it?

Probably quite a good market for stuff that is built to look like the original but works better

Reckon some modern 9speed thumbies would be the dogs danglies :D

i like the idea from some angles as it would make it easier to finish some builds. if i could pop to halfords and get a set of reissue onza ho cantis i'd be straight on it.

having said that they would always be re - issue. they would never be the originals.

on the whole i dont like the idea. part of the fun/frustration of building retro bikes it the months searching for THAT particular part.

i bet somewhere in the world there will be just about every part everyone needs! somewhere.

i think it would be the uber high end stuff that would be able to do it. a re issue ti fat chance. i am sure they could name their price

Used to be into retro r/c buggies in a big way and still have some. Tamiya started to re-release some of them a few years back and have continued to bring a new one out every now and then (Lunchbox, boomerang, hotshot, etc). It got the collectors buzzing but the market for the originals dropped as a result. The mint originals still hold their money but anything less then perfect suffered. Win win if you didn't have the buggy you wanted or planned to run them but some people lost out. The re-releases are nearly the same as the originals but minor problems have been fixed.

On the bike front I guess companies like Orange have done it in a way with the 2007 Clockwork and 2008 Prestige. Some retro re-release Shimano parts would be ace and I'm sure the big S will do it if they think there's a market. :? :D

this i agree with, it would always be re issue, but i think it would be a good idea for spares, m900 jockey wheels, brake pads, cassettes, m900 rapid fire units cos they eventually die.

if you remade the early stuff it would de-value the original but making spares keeps the original stuff alive.

:D

I like the idea of re issue tyres
then you could use the bloody things and know you can replace them

As long as the re issue has enough differences that it CANNOT be confused with the original i'm all for it

I'd love to see some re issue Helmets, as I'm not tat keen on using a 20 yo giro  , no matter how much It would complete any project

What about if companies used the original moulds, jigs, tools, metals, rubbers techniques etc... then essentially it would be an original just made 15-20 years later right?
I'd be in for a few things...

The thing is, it's not in the interests of the manufacturers to support old kit. They want you to upgrade.

Modern reissues are generally an attempt to inoke the style of the older kit, as opposed to the function which just isn't as good. People who want to buy a new bike don't generally want faithful reproductions, however misguided that is.

State of the art always changes.

yes my faithful old spade - replaced the handle 3 times, and the head twice. but it's done me proud all these years

The only thing I want Shimano to start doing again is the UN-9x series bottom bracket, hell the UN-7x series would be a start.. Not this half and half UN-54 we are stuck with... which is a midway between an old UN5x series and UN7x series.

The one problem with reissues is the price, they; be at current RRP prices not the knocked down prices we buy even NOS stuff at.

A MAG21 would probably be back up in the >£300 range for reissue stuff and I doubt very few would actually pay that.
