Without a shadow of doubt clear coat it - otherwise this winter`s salty roads and general crud will have a good nosh on your ally,no matter how much washing/polishing you do the rot will start if left bare.Besides, you dont want to be spending more time polishing/fretting than riding.

Re:

No don't clear coat it, it will probably peel sooner or later. Might be alright if it's done professionally I suppose but clear coat is designed to stick to paint. Anyway I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times on here before, use the search bar :p

Peeling is likely, but corroding under the clear coat is also a factor. That will look very ugly and you can't reach it, unless you strip the coat.

I live at the coast, but I never use my Rafty, Vitus, Alan (bare lugs) in the sea or on salty roads. I never had issues.

Re:

Obviously get it shot by a pro.Clear coat when applied properly at the right temperature will stick to anything and last years,if done right there will be no issues with lifting,in the car/bike resto game, polished ally is usually shot clear coated. The first frame I stripped and buffed in the early 90s wasnt clear coated and I had to get it re ball burnished the following year. After getting it clear coated by a pro painter the finish lasted for the 3 years I had it.Any dings/cracks/stone chips in the clear coat can be touched in with araldite, this will prevent the spread of corrosion.
