Help needed for information on this Raleigh Special Products frame:

I've bought a Raleigh SP150 frame from eBay. It's meant as a frame swap for a Viking Targa DD24:

It's aluminium, has 'Raleigh Special Products' 150 on and has disc mounts. The plastic labelling's not in great condition but otherwise it's OK. The bonus was the Selle Italia specific seat for it, which wasn't expected/in the listing.

The serial no. is: 53816281 and it weighs 2.2kg.

Any ideas about year/etc would be great. I need to organise a different crankset and possibly different forks to match the frame plus other bits.

Oh, and I've also got a 1986 Raleigh Team - pictured as bought, but now has a black saddle, NOS blue bar tape, NOS black brake hoods, Michelin Dynamic tyres with different wheels and is in regular use:

Replacing the frame on the viking is wise, but without appearing rude, the parts are so low end that they will soon need upgrading for the raleigh.

The raleigh frame is really nice, circa 2000 as above says.

I'd start looking for parts as you can buy second hand STX/deore etc for peanuts to get it built up. You should be able to build it up for £100, you would maybe get £30 for the viking as a complete bike. The difference between the two will be significant to say the least.

Thanks - and you're not being rude. The Viking is referred to as 'heap of junk' in my house, because it is. It cost £10, which was paid only because the seller had just bought a new tyre for it.

However, it does come with Deore shifters, mechs and crank although the cranks are in a bad state. The brakes are Promax ones though so they're temporary at best.

I bought it as a 'parts bin' to start the swap and the frame will be donated on. Last night I picked up some matching forks which helps and a new headset's arrived so the build will start shortly.

Cool. Like I say you can find bargains if you look and the deore you have is a good start.

The Raleigh is indeed 2000, and cost around £500 bitd. They're a decent bike and always got good reviews if I remember. Well worth building up.

An update:

The Raleigh SP150 build is finished; I repaired the original seat, fitted a new headset, crankset and front mech, used the Bars / shifters / rear mech / rear brakes from my Viking Targa and bits of other stuff including a second-hand fork plus a new front V-brake. It'll do as a runabout:
