Raleigh M-Trax Ti 1000 - My first build attempt - Finished!

It's been over 20 years since I've been involved with retro bikes (so at the time they weren't retro :) ). At the begining of the year I decided to delve back in get back up to speed.

I've got a tired M-Trax Ti 1000 frame that came with the headset, forks and stem and numerous parts that were very tired (but free!). I also bought a pair of wheels and the handlebar as a package.

I still haven't touched the frame but I have bought the paint in preparation for better weather to start the prep as I only have a shed and no garage.

The shifters weren't 'shifting' so a good squirt of GT85 and a wipe over the faded plastic with teak oil got them working and looking presentable.

The front mech has cleaned up a bit but still needs a bit more work on it.

The rear mech and crank were very poor but I thought I'd try and see what I could do as there was no harm in trying and that's part of the fun (for me anyway).

Cont... check out that jockey wheel!

I tried the automated bicycle part washer first with disappointing results.

I was intending to continue attempting to revive them but then I spotted a listing on an auction site with these parts in much better condition so I bid and won :D .

See the difference!

Remaining:
1. Source grips, pedals and chain.
2. Clean up cantilever brakes.
3. Prep and paint frame / forks / stem.
4. Build.

I'll add more along the way...

I didn't realise people actually put parts in the dishwasher. Never considered it, don't think I'd dare. Seeing those original parts reminds me of stripping down old bikes in the 90s trying to get them clean with an oily rag.

Love the M Trax frame

The Mrs wasn't too keen on the idea until I explained that I'd previously put car parts in there with no ill effects.

OK, progress is slow but then again I'm in no rush. I bought a set of cantis and thought I'd begin to clean them up.

I also bought a job lot of brake pads.

I did try using a rotary tool but I was getting more pleasing results using a rag, metal polish and elbow grease.
