Raleigh Gran Sport Actually Built see P.23

Re: Raleigh Gran Sport change of direction.

About this bike............

How hard is it to lace a wheel and true it all up etc?

And where and what would I need in the way of spokes and nipples? Cheap? Stainless?

Re:

I hate to say this but I think it deserves better spokes too....

In the 1984 catalogue it was specced with Stainless DB spokes ;)

Re:

Once upon a time Chain Reaction did a spoke ordering service, tell them the hub, rim, holes, and spoke pattern (normally 3x) and they would send you the right spokes.

Re: Raleigh Gran Sport change of direction.

I’m presuming a number of different lengths will be required? Symmetrical front and dished rear. Can you wip a couple out and measure them? From where to where?

See pic. How hard can it be. For the sake of £20 for pg stainless it’s worth me putting them together even if I have to get someone to true them up.

Easier to polish hubs and rims.............Not very British though.

I’ve found this online spoke calculator invaluable, as for spoke lengths, stick the bottom of a steel rule into the inside of the “J” bend and measure to the very end of the spoke.

As for dishing a wheel, I’ve found that for an old school 5 speed freewheel you only need the difference of about 1mm or 2 and I’ve usually don’t bother with a different length, just tighten up the freewheel side first.
That packet of stainless steel spokes I posted a picture of aren’t high-end but still good quality and they do have quite a range.

Werent the Zulus wearing wristwatches?

Anyway, you're missing the obvious, take an existing spoke and measure the bugger.

Yes got that. But how easy is it to do it competently? The building not the measurement.
