Raleigh Black Ops (Special Products) MTB

Retro Newbie
As you can see by my post count I am a newbie here, and also to mountain biking in general. I was pointed to this website by Dead Rats who thought that I could draw on your collective wisdom.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any info or opinions on the bike. I don't really care about its value as I wouldn't want to sell it, but I'd be interested if anyone knows more about it. I didn't even know Raleigh had a Black Ops (sorry, I mean Special Products) department.

As to spec, well I did warn you that I'm not an expert...

It has a Titanium frame which has the decals Quantum, Dyna-Tech and Titanium on it. There are 2 plaques (see pics for close ups) one saying it is a Raleigh Special Products Division bike, the other says it has a 2125 Performance Enhanced Tube set (what does this mean :?: ). It has 2 wheels which both go round :) . The front forks are Rock Shox Magnesium. It has cantilever brakes and the levers say Shimano. The gears are Shimano Index System. The handlebars seem too heavy to be any fancy alloy.

I am loving this bike, I've done 80k on it this week so far and am having a great time on the trails, disused railway lines and roads around me. It would be fascinating to learn more about the bike or recommendations for improving it from people in the know. Hope you enjoy the pics (I have more but I'm limited to 2mb upload limit, probably cos I'm a noob).

I can't wait to hear from you all!

Can't answer your questions mate but that is a NICE FRAME

sure some of the Raleigh dyna tech guys will be along soon ;)

Thanks Mr Panda, like I said I am really not an expert but I get the feeling I'm probably not worthy of it! I am just trying to make the most of a fabulous present.

It has titanium main tubes and a Reynolds 653 rear triangle, all glued into aluminium lugs. You've probably noticed it's stupidly lightweight already.

Lovely frames, those Dynatechs. It looks fine as it is; just go and enjoy it.

Hello again Dead Rats, thanks for your help with that bike the other day, I've put some new levers on and the brakes are fine now, I've also put on a new seat and pedals and the girlfriend loves it.

Chris, thanks for posting, it is indeed very lightweight and rides very well. I looked through the old Raleigh catalogues in the Retrobike archives and I think everything except the mudguard is pretty much as it was originally. Couldn't work out the year though (maybe I didn't look hard enough).

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm off for a ride.

Richard

That is lovely, in fact it's one of the bikes I wanted back in the day and I'd love to see it in the flesh.

It is a 1992 Raleigh Dyna Tech Quantum, with titanium main tubes, and a cro-moly rear triangle bonded together into aluminium lugs. It looks very original even down to the Tioga Hound Dawg/Mud Dawg tires.

Below is the page from the 92 catalogue:

I'm no expert, but like Dyna Techs so much I even started a thread about them here:
Raleigh Dyna Tech appreciation and information thread

Plenty of information has appeared including a fair bit about the 1992 range.

And welcome too by the way. I'm glad to hear that Dead Rats Al has been doing a good bit of PR for the forum. :D
