PULSTAR HUB - CASSETTE REMOVAL

The cassette on my pulstar hub will only allow 7 speeds. I am needing it to be 8 speed. I have broken the hub down all the way to the hub body and cassette. I cannot seem to get these two apart. An allen wrench fits both ends but I am afraid to force anything as they dont want to turn.

Any ideas? Is there a manual out there?

thanks,

Josh

The cassette is a stock Shimano / SRAM one? Then you need a chain whip and lock ring fitting to undo the splined lock ring on the cassette.

Re:

I think he means trying to remove the freehub. If so, good luck. They are bonded on with some super strength glue. Have tried myself and failed miserably - tried brute force, allen key in vice and two of us trying to turn the wheel. Ended up with the freehub exploding into tiny bits. Second attempt I tried softening the bonding with heat which failed. They aren't meant to come off.

The freehub bearing was a well documented weak point on Pulstar hubs.

It is on there really good. . . im taking it to my wheel builder to take a look at it. All I am trying to do is get an 8 speed cassette on it. The two 8 speed cassettes I have wont fit on it. 7 rings fit perfectly. . . 8, not so much.

7 speed and 8 speed hubs have a different length of freehub body so 8 (or 9,10,11) will not fit.

The only way you can get 8 speeds is to use a 9 speed hub and remove the largest cog and spacer. Then it fits exactly onto a 7 speed hub.

Re:

Ive got the freewheel / hub body off. . . the threads that screw into the hub are a larger diameter than my other freehubs. Not sure if I can swap out the middle guts of the freehub and change them out. Thoughts?

The other thought is to find one that works - I am guessing that will be a tough find.

or. . .

buy a pulstar hub with the larger freehub body and swap them out.

Thoughts? It is so funny to get this far and then run into a problem I never saw coming.

thanks guys.
