Hi all
I got my old Attitude Comp out a couple of months ago and had forgotten how fab a bike it was/is. After very good advice from on here I have replaced all cables and other consumables, fitted a new set of bars and stem (Thomson Elite), and some exotic carbon forks. Done a few miles too including the Whitehaven to Sunderland C2C.
The remaining niggle has been the gears which were pretty worn and hard to adjust, mainly through a knackered chain and general wear and tear. Chainset was LX and so the big ring wasn't replaceable so after some humming and hawing I found a VGC XT chain set suitable for square taper bottom brackets on ebay, got a new 8 speed cassette, jockey wheels and chain and off I go!
Well not quite. The chain set resisted a park tool, park tool and heat - then stripping the threads, then resisted a three arm puller and heat. I tried the "ride with the bolt out" for 30 miles through the peak district and still no movement. Finally the angle grinder came out and after a final battle its off and all sorted. Gears shift great now.
I have also just got hold of some old but decent SIDs (ebay again) and a remote poploc so more fun ahead I think.
This retrobike thing is fun and a lovely excuse to buy toys!
